Closing the Gap Final Product
Disparities
Disparity is defined to “a great difference”. It can be referred to in many ways but in our context we are looking at all the great differences between developing and developed countries. Socially and economically there are always many disparities between developing and developed countries.
This table (to the right) contrasts the disparities between a developed and developing country. These factors all contribute and are generally why countries are developed or developing.
Here is a quote by Bill Gates:
“I left Harvard with no real awareness of the awful inequities in the world -- the appalling disparities of health, and wealth, and opportunity that condemn millions of people to lives of despair.
I learned a lot here at Harvard about new ideas in economics and politics. I got great exposure to the advances being made in the sciences.
But humanity's greatest advances are not in its discoveries – but in how those discoveries are applied to reduce inequity. Whether through democracy, strong public education, quality health care, or broad economic opportunity – reducing inequity is the highest human achievement.”
When Bill Gates finished College he had no understanding of the inequalities in the world. How such great differences there were in health and wealth. At college he had learned lots about economic and science but there is no way you can teach about all the disparities, inequality and injustice in the world. It’s not what you invent or discover, it’s how they are applied to reduce inequality. Being equal is the ultimate human goal.
Disparities cause many problems between countries, socially, economically and politically. Think of them as great cracks or canyons between a developed country and becoming a developing country. That’s all need to be filled in before they can reach the final goal of equality.
After all this project is called closing the gap…
