Closing the Gap Final Product
Freedom Of speech
Recognised as a basic human right this particular topic is sensitive because of censorship. That is potentially best case scenario for some countries. Freedom of speech is important to the people of any given country and the fact that it is not recognised in a lot of countries today is shocking. In some cases censorship blocks out things like basic pornography or websites where you illegally download your movies, but for some countries the noose is so tight that no information is passed on from one person to another via any networking at all. Often times government censor articles and revealing exposes because they have something to hide and in most cases the truth comes to light and the government just has another scandal that people will be over before the next one starts. But for some countries it is so censored that most of the people are not aware how bad the crisis really is because the news is no longer reliable. It is under the thumb of your dictator or a corporation wanting to make money off the next big story. Countries like North Korea and China. These are some pretty extreme examples but this happens worldwide, people who have something worth it to say never get to say it because the consequences could potentially be life threatening if the information is valuable enough to the right people. The biggest problem is that the general population deserves to know what's going on above their heads and they need a way to get that information and share it to keep the leaders in check. This is a growing issue but it is also a shrinking one, because on one hand people understand that it is unfair and against human right to deny someone their freedom of speech, so there are people protesting and using their voice to make some kind of a difference even if it is just informing the public of what is going on because it is a global issue. If we cannot all get to a point where all human beings are treated equally and have the ability to exercise all their basic human rights then something needs to change because we cannot advance as a world until everyone is on safe stable ground. As an individual it is important to speak out and raise awareness about things happening in the world around you, stay up to date with the latest news in politics and environment as well as business and speak out about what you hear that is wrong. Organisations like the UN and Article 19( a reference to the declaration of independence free speech section) are working to combat censorship and give intellectual information to the public because ultimately knowledge is power.
